Spanish term

hepatomegalia tumoral

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) metastatic cancer report
This phrase shows up in a report of a PET/CT scan of a patient with colon cancer and liver metastases.

The sentence reads:

"Hepatomegalia tumoral con grandes lesiones tumorales, con centro necrótico las mayores ... "

I think this means that the liver is enlarged due to the tumor(s) ... but is there a concise way of translating "hepatomegalia tumoral"?

This is actually a proofreading job ... the linguist translated this as "Enlarged liver tumor with large tumoral lesions ..." but "enlarged liver tumor" doesn't feel quite right to me.

I appreciate your suggestions.

Grazie a te e buon lavoro, Joe. A presto, AR
Joseph Tein (asker) Jun 6, 2011:
Thank you all for your suggestions and contributions. I liked the sound and directness of Anna Rosa's one reference "tumor-induced hepatomegaly" and this is what I used in my translation.

Anne Schulz Jun 2, 2011:
agree with Emma in all aspects "tumor related hepatomegaly" or "tumoral hepatomegaly" seems adequate to me (but not "enlarged liver tumor")
Emma Goldsmith Jun 1, 2011:
Hi Joseph I can quite understand your concern that Google only returns 16 hits when "tumoral hepatomegaly" is searched with quotation marks. However, note that "hepatomegalia tumoral" only gets 46 hits, so we're not looking for a common expression here.
Your understanding that the "liver is enlarged due to the tumor" is correct, and if nobody comes up with anything better, then I would go with "tumoral hepatomegaly"
Charles Davis Jun 1, 2011:
Hi Joseph I get more results for "metastatic hepatomegaly", particularly in untranslated texts, but although this is presumably what the patient in your text has, I'm not confident enough to post it, because "metastatic" is not really an exact synonym of "tumoral". However, I offer the idea for what it's worth.
Joseph Tein (asker) Jun 1, 2011:
quotation marks ... to be really super clear ... when you search for a phrase without the quotation marks around it, you get many, many (as in "a lot") more answers than if you put in the words inside quotation marks.

Just as a trivial example: look up the phrase, with quotation marks, "cooked red chili peppers". Then put in the same words, same word order if you want, without the quotation marks ... you'll notice a slight difference in the number of google hits you get each way.

¿Capito?

Hi Joseph and Phil: I don't know if I have some 'super' version of Google, but here's the link:
http://www.google.com/search?q=hepatomegalia tumoral&hl=en&p...

...I counted over 30 hits just on the first few pages and the list goes on...lemme know if you can see them; I'd hate to think I'm hallucinating: (btw-I usually use the Mexican Google version :)))
Joseph Tein (asker) Jun 1, 2011:
Googling the suggested answer The version of Google that I have access to gives me 16 hits for this phrase ... when I put the words inside quotation marks "tumoral hepatomegaly". Of course we'll get hundreds of thousands of hits when we put in the words separately.

The sixteen hits ... or Phil's 25 hits (he must have a more powerful version of Google) is the reason that I posted this question. When there are so few instances of something online, it makes me think there must be a more common, more frequently used expression.

neoplastic related hepatomegaly

If you search on websites in English, there are more matches for this one and it is always related to that topic.
Example sentence:

Neoplastic related hepatomegaly refers to an enlarged liver that is linked to a tumor consisting of an abnormal growth of cells.

The following medical conditions are some of the possible causes of Neoplastic related hepatomegaly.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Emma Goldsmith : I like the idea of this, but all 21 Google hits (in quotation marks !!) are nearly all from the same website. I also feel that "neoplastic-related" sounds a bit strange on a PET scan, which is just stating what can be seen.

Yes, that made me wonder a little bit, but I neither feel comfortable with the other answer... sounds very much like a translation...
agree Muriel Vasconcellos : While it's true that the examples all come from the same website, there are numerous entries on the subject, and I think this is about the best one could do, given the Spanish.
