History
This is quite a basic query but something I'd like to make clear. I've being reading about the social life of Madrid during the Bourbon period. I'd like to know whether 'fiestas' in the foll. sentences refers to 'holidays' or to 'festival-celebrations'.
'Entre las diversiones más apreciadas por los madrileños podemos señalar los bailes, las verbenas, los toros y el juego. Estos últimos, en algunos momentos fueron prohibídos. Las fiestas eran frecuentes, unas relacionadas con festividades religiosas y otras con celebraciones de la Casa Real'.
Also, I wonder is there any rule or guidelines to follow in order to clearly differentiate bet. the meanings of 'fiesta'.
Many thanks in advance for all the help, viplav

Aoife Kennedy
: Festival is correct here, meaning specific days marked on the calendar for celebrations related to the royal family or the feast days of saints.

: Yes, regarding your question. If it says just fiestas, it usually refers to festivals; for holidays, it would usually say "días festivos” or "fiestas de guardar" (for religious holidays)

Aoife Kennedy
: "festivities were frequent"... no, that doesn't sound right, as the word is usually used to describe celebrations organised for an established festival, which is marked on the calendar.

Feast
For "fiesta" I think the term is "feast" and festivity for a series of feasts.
