coastal barometric trough
based on the context, it seems to me that the sentence might be referring instead to the meteorological definition of vaguada:
(from the rae):
Depresión barométrica que en forma de valle penetra entre dos zonas de alta presión.
in English: low pressure/barometric trough/trough of low pressure
I am not a weather expert, but it seems like an ocean current is more likely to affect barometric than it is a valley/inlet.

*sorry, I meant to say more likely to affect barometric PRESSURE than it is a valley/inlet.

Comment: "Thanks. I agree it has to be a weather phenomenon, rather than a geographic feature."

The moisture in arid and semi-arid atmospheres in Chile enters in three ( different) ways: winter rains borne by western winds, summer rains borne by eastern winds, and coastal valleys/ inlets from the effects of the cold Humboldt current.

“The ‘vaguada costera’ (coastal trough) phenomenon creates special conditions for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon Gris, bringing them a high class acidity and minerality.
