Spanish term

bahia

Spanish to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Mexico
This is from a personal story, a driver is recounting an accident: "me meti por una bahia por donde estan los taxis...hasta encontrar una salida"

I've tried "bay" in English but it doesn't seem to work with the idea of finding a "salida." Could this be a word for a parking garage?

Please note this is Mexican Spanish.

Thanks!

bay (U.S.) Maybe it's at the taxi garage. A bay is a section of the garage where one vehicle can drive in. Maybe he drove into the bay, but then the taxi drivers wouldn't let him go out (of the taxi garage) driving forward, so he tried to back out. You know? At auto mechanics, they tell you to drive into the first (or 2nd, etc.) bay.

not sure about bay or rank The story goes that he drives into the "bahia", the taxi drivers won't let him out, so he tries to go in reverse until he can find an exit. I'm picturing this to be a long, extra lane on the side of the road where the taxis sit and wait in a line. Is this called a bay? (I've not heard rank used in US English) Thanks!

rank / bay

I guess he drove down the taxi rank to avoid traffic, with "salida" here referring to coming out of the traffic. Could do with more context :)

"bay" is used but "rank" is more common in the UK.

taxicab stand

I've also come across 'stand':

I presume he couldn´t get out of the stand once he'd entered it, got stuck behind the taxis that were queued up.

They call them 'stands' in New York at least.

Peer comment(s):

agree Robert Forstag : "Taxi stand" seems to be the most commonly used term in US English (nobody seems to use the term "taxicab" in the US any more).
