Peer comment(s):

neutral Margaret Schroeder : Oxford seems to be a little confused. In Mexico, a pasante is not necessarily a teacher, simply a student who has not completed certain degree requirements.

trainee, intern

Marina Orellana´s "Glosario Internacional para el Traductor" has the following entry. The reference to Mexico may be useful:

pasante:trainee; (med) clinical clerk; (Mex) student who, having completed a professional course, is performing his social service, (ed) coaching teacher; (summer) intern

Thanks, Guillermo. I just happen to have the right dictionary... ;)
neutral Seth Phillips : Pastante has multiple meanings. The dictionary you cite also mentions "student who, having completed a professional course, is performing his social service" (in Mexico), which is the precise context here.
