desenganche

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Company Presentation
Good evening fellow ProZians,

This is from the same PowerPoint presentation I referred to in my previous question. Basically, a ridiculously large Spanish multinational is streamlining their IT infrastructure across the many different business units that make up their group, and have devised a mega-project to outsource the implementation of the required changes.

I understand what is being said here perfectly, but just cannot think of a neat way of expressing it in English. They’re basically saying that any proposals that straw away from, or deviate from their mega-project must be able to justify that the alternative suggested is better than the offers received from outsourcers in terms of the points listed.

Here’s the context:

Can anyone think of a way of expressing this neatly in UK English? I would prefer a 1-word solution to keep things in line with the original (but if needs must, of course I will do whatever is needed).

Many thanks in advance.

Discussion

James A. Walsh (asker) May 23, 2010:
pSiCutrinius even! Sorry for the misspelling there...
James A. Walsh (asker) May 23, 2010:
I think Andrew L-D hit the nail on the head! Thanks for your musings pcisutrinius. I managed to weave Andrew's suggestion perfectly into my English rendition, which works great I think. I really understand the text as I've been an IT technical writer for 12+ years, but breakaway just eluded me, and works great:

"- Ongoing participation and feedback between the various players and stakeholders involved in the project
- “Breakaway” proposals will be considered — but the suggested technical solution must match or exceed the offers received in terms of:
o Removing operational risks
o Reducing future operating costs
o Being fully compatible with YYY’s systems (security, communications, etc.)”

Taña Dalglish May 23, 2010:
@ pcisutrinius Do you mean a "point of departure" (for want of a better term)? Abrazos.
psicutrinius May 23, 2010:
there is a better term in Spanish... descolgar[se] 9. prnl. (DRAE)

But the English translation eludes me. Hope that this idea brings in a fresh departure.

digression

James: I think you are just fine with "deviation". But if you'd like a "poetic" alternative (because digression primarily pertains to the spoken word), this is my suggestion. Suerte!

alternative proposals

It may not be what Asker likes to call 'neat' - but it is the usual term in this context.

I suspect this mega-multinational would like to be understood - even if, as a consequence, it doesn't appear to be the neatest set-up on the block.
