Apparently appears on a cheque, meaning the total amount written out in full, in words not figures. I haven't used cheques for years - does it actually say anything on a cheque along these lines?

a U.S. check does not usually bear that legend... it has a blank line then says DOLLARS.... you're supposed to know that means write in the amount in words (and yes, I just pulled out my checkbook to verify...)
