Another ambiguous use of the word "alta" - any native Spanish-speakers who could explain what they understand by this, please? (I presume it refers to date they joined the company or something - but it is ambiguous to me)

: In the US, it would be "date of hire". If when you're hired you must also register with SS, then that should suffice.

: La confusión se hace cuando "se da de alta" en un hospital, ya que en este caso es "discharge" o sea cuando el paciente abandona el hospital.

The date of the worker's entry is the date in which the worker joined the country; however, in the U.S., at least, the social security number is not registered anywhere when an employee joins the company. At tax time, a form is sent (such as a W2) that includes the tax information of the employees.

: This must be the right interpretation in the context. As Spielenschach points out, 'dar de alta' usually means 'to release, to sign out, to terminate an institutional relationship', but that does not fit here and the converse interpretation is justified.

: Yo lo expresaría simplemente como "employee's entry date" y ya. Así no hay que involucrarse con registros, etc. Es la fecha de ingreso, si lo registran o no es asunto de la compañía.
