Spanish term

plano

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Architecture drafting (I think)
Hi All

This is a seemingly simple query but proving much more difficult than I envisioned. Here's the context:
In a novel set in the late 80s-early 90s, a Mexican woman is attending college in the US. She is studying animal husbandry. One of her courses is in "planos". For her final project in the course, she has drawn a "plano" of a meat-processing facility that includes all of the details (walls, chutes, fences, parking lots, etc) of the slaughterhouse. She is constantly practicing making "planos" the way her professor does, imitating the way he holds his pencil, etc.

I have so far been varying terms between: blueprint, technical drawing, and wondering on occasion about diagram and design. I don't think there is one term that will fit for all instances (e.g. I am fairly certain I need to use blueprint some of the time, despite no mention of special blueprint paper, and yet I have not found examples courses in "blueprints" in US colleges, and for the course I think probably "technical drawing"--or "drafting"???).

No one has used any computers in the making of any of these drawings, btw, if that makes a difference.
Is there a good informal term that means the same thing as blueprint? For instance, at one point she is furious and yelling at the teaching assistant, "I want my plano back! Give me my plano!" And "blueprint" here sounds too formal to my ear. Other options? Here is one more example:

"Other students’ technical drawings (or whatever term I end up using) were 1.5 meters by .70 meters, each rolled up and placed in a.8 meter document tube. Mine was 5 by 7 meters, rolled up and stored in a 5-meter document tube." (Her professor, btw, later tells her that her "plano" is useless because she has included so much detail, and that a "plano" should be an abstraction that contains only useful information, not every detail.

Many, many thanks in advance!

Phil.. What would the course be then? Making plans (no), planning (no) ........ I think plano must be drawing in this sense. A 'plan' of a building for example would only be looking from above, as in 'plans and elevations', unless there is a special course for preparing 'floor plans'.

If it's not a silly question, what's wrong with "plan"?

When you see references to 'plano' de las obras, or plano in any other technical context it is translated as 'drawing'.
In the context of a course it is normally called 'technical drawing' - since drawing by itself could refer to artistic sketching. In you context technical drawing would be the term, but in a general sense it would be simply 'drawing'.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I very much thank everyone for all of the replies, and think that depending on instance, some of the other offerings ma be useful as well (esp. plan view drawing and ground plan) but these will be the most valid in the range of cases (the course, the project, etc). Again, thanks everyone. Best, Lisa"

También se denomina plano la representación de la planta de un edificio, así como a las representaciones y esquemas de los diseños industriales.

design

I think you could use this in some of the circumstances you need it, especially "I want my design back" "give me my design".

Presumably her project was to design this facility and it is a general enough term for her to use here.

It would work in your last paragraph too.

plan (view) drawing, commonly referred to as 'plan'

The problem is that these drawings are commonly referred to as 'plans', but the full, specific name is 'plan view drawing'.

I've been taking classes in preparing plan view drawings.

'Plan view' means that the representation is seen from directly overhead, as opposed to an elevation, a section, a projection, a perspective drawing, or a 3D drawing.

Definitions of 'plan view':

A drawing that shows the appearance of an object when seen from above. Read more: http://www.answers.com/topic/plan-view#ixzz1CGwe6kEZ

Drawing of a structure with the view from overhead, looking down.

I didn't read your context more carefully. I'm touched: I can completely identify with the woman who is practicing how to hold her pencil the way her teacher does.

(rough) draught plan or outline

some more options

the course she's doing could be draughting or indeed technical drawing

(rough) draft imo a rough draft because it is hardly worked up into an actual blueprint. This seems to be only a minor part of her course

Synonyms: draft, outline, plan, sketch
