Slovak term

mikina

Non-PRO Slovak to English Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion type of jacket
I am translating an advertisement from a clothing manufacturer to be sent to retail stores. Does anyone know what would be the most appropriate English-language translation of the Slovak (and Czech) word "mikina". From pictures I've seen of this article of clothing, it appears to be a type of jacket or coat. I'll need an answer by Sunday night, 23 August because of the deadline involved. Thank you for any help.

Barbara Heyes Aug 23, 2009:
how about softshell If you lean towards "membrane jacket" would you not consider "softshell" as a better option?
Maria Chmelarova Aug 22, 2009:
mikina, mikina s kapuci www.litex.net, en.wiktionary.org/wiki/mikina

Depends on what it looks like I would say that majority of these garments have hoods these days and we call them "hoody" over here (if pull-over one) or "zip-up hoody" (if with zip). Otherwise "sweatshirt".

sweatshirt

That should be it.
Note from asker:
I am leaning toward "sweatshirt" and my Slovak native-speaker wife also says "sweatshirt". but examples of "mikina" I have seen on Google and several sports-related webpages in Slovakia nd Czech Republic had me leaning toward "membrane jacket", which also jives with the context. After reading the replies, I going with "sweatshirt", too. Thank you for your help very much. Next month when I (hopefully) will finally be translating full-time, I intend to joint "proz.com"

fleece jacket/fleece top

Just another tip. This has quite a few names that are very commonly used in the UK. Also, fleece pullover...
Note from asker:
I've heard a number now: fleece jacket, membrane jacket, softshell. There are a few more names in America where I'm originally from (e.g. track jackets, varsity jackets). In the end I chose sweatshirt and softshell from pictures I saw on several Slovak clothing websites for "mikina" and comparing them to pictures on English-language sites. It's too easy to argue over the proper word, and I had to make one of those "seat of the pants" (no pun intended) decisions.
