Пардон... Большинство "Fat Cats", наверное, относятся к "паразитическим иерархам". Но я подозреваю,бывают и "светлые",кой-кто же детские дома строит за свои деньги.

Александра, Вы поменяли тему. Ну а насчет светлости и святости: оригинал - это литературное произведение, а не учебник истории. И если бы автор написал "святые иерархи", то это неизбежно вызывало бы прямые ассоциации с Православной и Католической церквями, чего он, по всей видимости хотел избежать.

Можно сказать Hierarchs of Light, но на мой взгляд латинское слово luminous придает более торжественную ауру всей фразе, чего, на мой взгляд, хочет добиться автор в оригинале.

Александра, Если бы автор книги хотел назвать Светлых Иерархов теневыми воротилами бизнеса, мафиози, коррумпированными чиновниками и т.д. он бы так и сделал. Зачем вкладывать в перевод смысл, которого нет в оригинале. Тем более, что они отнюдь не злые силы, а добрые.

Никакой иронии в тексте нет Коллеги, мне кажется мы движемся не в том направлении. Светлый здесь употребляется в противовес темному, т.е. силы света против сил тьмы. Поэтому вариант А.Рышова пока кажется наиболее близким к истине. Интересно услышать мнение носителей.

American or any other English language speaker would raise his/her brows when hearing these words.Who are they these "hierarchs"?They are those which play their managerial role in business indirectly, Russian Cosa Nostras, government, governmental powers as well as bank board members.These people are called "fat cats"and other names for them are available.

Причем здесь эта ссылка? I am afraid lexical compatibility has nothing to do with the translation of this particular phrase. The two words are compatible both in Russian and in English.

How do you know that it's not exactly the meaning the author puts into the phrase in You won't here Светлый Иерарх every day on every street corner in Russia. In Russian it sounds slightly archaic, taken from history books, etc. We should convey the same in English, а не называть их денежными мешками, ожиревшими котами и т.д., когда в оригинале и намека на это нет.

А волосатый арбуз и по-русски вызывает смех.

That is it:in Russian but not in English, you cannot put these words together in English.For English ear that is nonsense, a number of questions.While in Russian these two words are compartible and that what is ridiculous is laughable.The only thing to do - to use a core meaning of this expression and to say the same in different words.Besides "hierarch" is almost archaic and belongs to history books/specifically sociology, etc.

Светлый Иерарх is a perfect example of a lexical incompatibility in English, for instance :"hairy watermelon" or "mischievous Hitler" are the same as.

As the majority of Russian political leaders together with top tycoons do not get out of the cathedrals nowdays (heart-touching photos of Chrstmas and Easter ceremonies in every paper: the former KGB officer holds a bunch of candles with an expression on his face of being enlightened ) they were called "Saintly". Hypocrites to the core, so many of them appear to be the kiddy-lovers which donate to children homes and hospitals, some- step forward as subsidizers of a new church building projects. but that is all just for show.

"Holy cow" -that is funny, "Holy Hierarch" does not sound funny because it does not have any sense.
