Discussion

Elena Ow-Wing Feb 15, 2017:
I reread my first discussion post and realized that I was not very clear. So to correct that: In my example, when I called the physical therapy facility to schedule my treatment sessions the first thing they asked about was my physician's order for the physical therapy treatment. And again as a health care interpreter I don't come across the words "prescribed / prescription" when it comes to procedures and treatments. The standard word is "an order" , " to order". Sorry for possible typos as I am using the iPad.
Elena Ow-Wing Feb 15, 2017:
Ordered vs prescribed I wonder if "prescribed" is a word used by non-professionals. Ilan's source is a mass media one vs professional sources. Just recently I had PT treatment. When I called the doctor's office the first thing they asked about was if I had a physician's ORDER, not really a physician's prescription because that would mean a medication prescription which was irrelevant in that case. So I advise the asker to make more research by himself not to make a mistake.

neutral Elena Ow-Wing : Medications are prescribed. In US we say that procedures are ordered. Is it a UK usage?/ I hear "ordered" all the time regarding procedures, don't recall hearing that a surgery or a procedure or a massage can be prescribed. Very interesting.

It is US and UK usage, e.g http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/01/20/catholic-ho...

on a physician's order

A procedure is performed only on a physician's order.

Just a contextual use:

OR another wording option, depending on the context: A procedure must be ordered by a physician.
