I guess, it is a typo and should run as "в стадии ОБОСТРЕНИЯ" that could be translated as "acute"—acute duodenal ulcer.

There are many documents that I have been translating and quite often the Russian language in them has been somehow peculiar. Nevertheless, ‘acute’ seems to be appropriate to the wider context. Besides, I am actually translating into Finnish, and thus the exact English diction isn’t essential. "

in Italian, I would've tended to translate it as "conclamato" (full-blown).
However, "thriving" is even better, becaus what I think they mean here is, so to speak, “идущее полным ходом“

Т.е. если здесь есть опечатка или какие-то прочие дефекты оригинала, то, скорее, именно речь о ремиссии, ибо ОБОСТРЕНИЕ в "схему" опечатки сложно вставить
