near-thrust zone

In this case, as in other geology, tectonics, and earth sciences in general, the prefix "при" almost always means "near" and definitely not "pre", which is often incorrectly translated, for example, pre-Caspian, or "sub" for which there are other Russian prefixes in geological topics. I realize the references given below are Russian and therefore suspect as to correct translation, but here they are. In addition, thrust, overthrust, and thrust fault are synonymous in the event they want to be used with near-.

Because при sounds like pre doesn't mean it means before, in front of, etc. Look at all the Russian geographic names with при and most mean near not pre-.

Maybe it's right after all: "between the Laurentian margin and the accretionary prism above an outboard-facing subduction zone. Within the thrust system, any prethrust normal faults"

Peer comment(s):

neutral Maria Fokin : my only concern here is that in english the term prethrust is temporal, as in your second example. it is talking about normal faluts that where present prior to a compressional event. whereas in russian the term принадвиговая зона refers to an area

Thanks, Maria. I am ignorant in this domain.
disagree Dorene Cornwell : this is clearly spatial, in front of, not temporal

Oops. Thanks, Dorene. As I said, I'm out of my league.

that should be "overthrust zone". oops!

disagree Jack slep : yes, (over)thrust zone if it were надвиговая зона, but with the prefix при it's near-

subduction zone

In this context, if there is one side of a fault being thrust upward, the other side, the other plate being pushed down is called the subduction zone.

I would check some sample texts to make sure this fits your context, but this is where I would start.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Jack slep : Other terms are used for subduction zone
