The model of land occupation that nowadays characterizes the metropolitan region of Barcelona has its origin in the expansion movements started in the city of Barcelona during the first decades of the 19th century, with the first occupations outside the city walls, which were always seeking for spaces further and further the city centre. This way, the industrial activities, the dwelling, the facilities, the green areas and the commercial areas have become the main actors of a land occupation process characterized by the dispersion, either in terms centre-perifery or in terms concentration-deconcentration. The way in which this occupation has developed is closely linked to the urban planning main features, with different approaches between the period 1956-1976 and the re-instauration of democratic local administrations. For this reason, it is necessary to tone down some interpretations about data of land consumption that have been implemented during these last years starting from the identification of the diverse stages in the occupation (preurbanization, complete urbanization and edification) and of its assignation to the period of time to which they belong, as well as to keep working in the collection and the ellaboration of new data that enables to go deeper in this knowledge.

land use ( percentage)
Land use is the human modification of natural environment or wilderness into built environment such as fields, pastures, and settlements. The major effect of land use on land cover since 1750 has been deforestation of temperate regions.[1] More recent significant effects of land use include urban sprawl, soil erosion, soil degradation, salinization, and desertification.[2] Land-use change, together with use of fossil fuels, are the major anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide, a dominant greenhouse gas.[3] It has also been defined as "the total of arrangements, activities, and inputs that people undertake in a certain land cover type" (FAO, 1997a; FAO/UNEP, 1999).
