to sleep with

I am not about US slang, and so do not know if Beta's answer "to hook up with" is the same as "to sleep with", but this is how I would translate "ficar".

- to sleep with in terms of "no commitment", in contrast to "dating", "going out with" etc.

Another way the idea os expressed in UK slang is the same as Beta suggested - "seeing" - ie - sleeping with someone with no commitement.

There are loads of other ways to say this in various levels of UK slang, depending on how colloquial you want the translation to be. However, I wold translate it as above, as I do not think that "ficar" is particularly crude in portuguese, so slang is not necessarily needed in the translation either.

Check out the follwing refs, explaining the concept further!

Here is another link to an article that explains the phenomenon of "ficar", and explains the more serious implications and responsibilities associated with "ficando":
http://www.saudeplena.com.br/noticias/index_html?opcao=05-23...

"Também na fase do ficar, é possível haver implicações jurídicas, como no caso de uma jovem que engravidou de um rapaz com quem tinha “ficado’ apenas uma vez.”

Peer comment(s):

disagree Cybeles Lehner : "Ficar" doesn't imply "to sleep with". It means a relationship without commitment...

What is a "relationship without commitment" if it is not sleeping with someone without "officially" categorising the relationship as "namorar", "casar", etc? - "sleeping with someone" = a sexual relationship without commitment.
disagree Jorge Rodrigues : In Brazil, "ficar" does not necessarily involve a sexual relationship. Actually, in most cases it doesn't. This term usually refers to pre teens and teens and just means hugging, kissing, and so on.

disagree Paul Dixon : I agree with Cybeles and Jorge here. "Ficar" does not necessarily involve sleeping together.
