: Disguised = the situation was serious even though it did not appear so. Belied = the situation was not serious even though it appeared so. See Phil's answer.

That is right, it was serious. A gravidade da situação, uma situação muito grave, séria, mas o sorriso disfarçava, disguised it, hid it.
