Pan/Pani

Polish Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
I'd like to know if it is correct to write the words "Pan" and "Pani" with small letters (if it's not the official correspondence). Is it necessary to put the capital letters in the beginning of these words? Thank you in advance.

Pan/Pani/Państwo

You should use capital letters when you address somebody directly: "Szanowna Pani Mario / Szanowny Panie Janie / Szanowni Państwo" or "chciałabym Panią / Pana / Państwo zaprosić".

You need not use capital letters when you are writing about somebody (in the third person):
"Przyszła pani Maria / przyszedł pan Jan / przyszli państwo Kowalscy"
"poznałam tę panią / tego pana / tych państwa rok temu"

Pan/Pani

It is more polite to use capital letters with Pan/Pani when you address someone in a letter.
