I can't decide between department, specialisation area, academic program. Please comment.

Some time age someone was translating a university diploma and I quoted mine - "officially" translated and issued in English by my alma mater, UAM. "Na kierunku" was translated as "in the field of". Lookie here:

However, I think the translation will depend on the context and it would be nice if you could give us more of it.
In any case I wouldn't use "department" because to me it means "wydział".

: I kinda like this one, but it doesn't solve the issue of the phrase "zajęcia na kierunku […]". "Classes in the field […]" just doesn't sound right to me.

department will also do in some cases. But department is an administrative unit.
Major indicates the area, the field. But major is the proper term used in
university studies. Field is more general, used in describing one's area of expertise.
