Can you speak Malay?

awak boleh cakap melayu? - Can you speak Malay?
Peer comment(s):

agree ajali : I think its will be better to add "language" after Malay. Should be " Can you speak Malay language"

agree Ramona Ali : Agree with Nasima's answer. 'language' is redundant. It's common & correct to say 'do/can you speak English?', and not 'do you speak English language?' - it even sounds odd.

Malay

It's not grammatically correct. It should be "Boleh awak berbahasa Melayu?"

It could also be \"Adakah awak berbahasa Melayu?\"
Peer comment(s):

agree ajali : Agree with the first sentence but need "kah" because it is a question. So, it should be "Bolehkah awak berbahasa Melayu?"

disagree Ramona Ali : This is a Malay>English question. Also 'adakah awak berbahasa Melayu' is wrong - this back-translates into 'Do you have the Malay language?' (as in 'adakah awak beristeri dua?')

agree Mat Radin : Another way of saying it is "Do you speak Malay?" and I think the right translation for "Adakah awak berbahasa Melayu?" is "Are you speaking Malay?"
