Italian term

case per ferie

Italian to English Other Tourism & Travel type of accommodation
Although I know exactly what they are, I don't know the English term for them (do they exist in English-speaking countries?)

Translating a list of different types of accommodation, on which the tourism levy (tassa di soggiorno) is to be paid
Case vacanze I have translated as 'holiday homes'
But what about a 'casa per ferie'? I know it is pretty similar to a 'colonia', but I would not consider 'holiday camp' (the Word ref. suggestion) suitable. Group accommodation/large group accommodation or organized group accommodation come to mind, but I am afraid they might be confused with luxury villas for 20 etc.....

Many thanks

done! Thanks, Gallagy, I thought I had - I filled it out at the same time as I awarded the points, but think it must have disappeared when I submitted points and failed to go back to gloss.... cheers!
Yvonne Gallagher Mar 21, 2012:
Indeed! You should put it in the Glossary anyway for future reference!
Lorraine Buckley (X) (asker) Mar 21, 2012:
not-for-profit holiday accommodation It is a horrible mouthful but as 'case per ferie' is a clearly-defined category, I needed something that gives an idea what it is. Thank goodness English tourism is not so obsessed with categorising everything, but as this is a levy applied to tourists in Italy, we have to go with their categories
Yvonne Gallagher Mar 21, 2012:
Thanks Lorraine for explanation. Sorry didn't get back to you as was up to my eyes with work and then a tech problem with SDL meant having to redo work. Still can't think of a precise term for this in English so wondering what you used in the end? I was thinking of (hostel-style) or (visitor) accomodation"
Lorraine Buckley (X) (asker) Mar 16, 2012:
@ gallagy2 As said, it is a translation of a series of different types of accommodation people may occupy and the type of accommodation determines the tourism levy payable. It's a per person/night thing. So the 'case per ferie' may be for 'ex opera performers' grandchildren' or 'Fiat workers and their families' or may be run by a religious congregation for pilgrims or for anyone so long as they pay. 'Case per ferie' is an official classification, as Judith found for Teramo province. Each region is likely to have its own definition but 'grosso modo' the offer is low-cost rather Spartan accommodation (and the levy is the same as for hostels)
Yvonne Gallagher Mar 16, 2012:
Hi Lorraine. Who are the people going to these placesand what is the purpose of their visit? Are they tourists or people going on pilgrimage or retreat?
Lorraine Buckley (X) (asker) Mar 16, 2012:
brilliant Yes, that sounds just right though a little wordy: but I think it's the only way to say it. Many thanks again, I hadn't thought of the not-for.profit side of it.
Judith McLean Mar 16, 2012:
Hi Lorraine. I've added a note to my answer as I no longer think it's right for the same reasons you said. I would say 'not for profit group accommodation' or simply 'not for profit accommodation' or even 'not for profit holiday accommodation', something along those lines anyway
Lorraine Buckley (X) (asker) Mar 16, 2012:
More details Thanks for answers so far, but none suitable. Guest houses are affittacamere (I already have that category) or B&B. Timeshare and group homes are also not what 'case per ferie' are: these are large boarding-school-type structures, often owned by religious or public bodies and offered to certain categories Example found on Internet "Norme particolari per la denuncia di inizio attività di case per ferie, rifugi e bivacchi.
1. Per le case per ferie, la denuncia di inizio attività *individua i soggetti cui la struttura è destinata*" So it is quite specific. Maybe 'holiday lodging for specific categories'??? Doesn't sound great!

guest house

Just a suggestion really. I think the difference could be a holiday home which you rent in its entirely, and a guesthouse where it is essentially a type of bed and breakfast where the home is rented by the room or as a whole and the accommodation is serviced in some way, but it isn't classified as a hotel.

I've just found the definition. In fact the important thing is that it's not for profit group accommodation.

Note from asker:
Thanks Judith, but (see my discussion entry above), this doesn't work. Much appreciate any further suggestions!
Hi Judith, our notes just crossed! Exactly right, so now for an English translation!

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "thanks for your help, Judith - winner is of course the definition and not guest house!"
