Italian term
movimenti afinalistici
Italian to English
Medical
Medical (general)
huntington's disease / chorea
il disturbo motorio più comune è la còrea, caratterizzata da movimenti involontari improvvisi, afinalistici ed irregolari per ampiezza, frequenza e gruppi muscolari coinvolti.
I have not been able to find a reliable definition of the term in Italian or a reliable translation source, but I am tempted to translate afinalistico as aimless. Does anyone agree/disagree?

purposeless movements
As an alternative to your aimless :-)
However, this is the right sense of "afinalistici" in this context.
HTH
Chorea describes involuntary, irregular, purposeless on-rhythmic movements which are rapid and jerky and flow from one part of the body to another.

uncontrolled movements
you will find many medical examples for this suggestion. There are special therapies for treating this disorder ......

Mihaela Petrican
: it stands for "movimenti incontrollabili", nothing to do with "afinalistici"

wandering movements
Another possibility would be
"AFINALISTIC MOVEMENTS".
However, "wandering movements" is preferable as "afinalistic" is not used often in English and most people would not understand the meaning.

I didn't have enough room to respond to Mihaela's comment below, so I am responding here. I was trying to say that "wandering movements" can be a good translation for the phrase you asked for, "movimenti finalistici", in many contexts. However, in this particular context regarding chorea, "wandering" is not the most ideal choice because though "wandering" doesn't necessarily involve walking, it is often used to imply walking. My mistake was that in answering this question, I focused too much on the phrase "movimenti afinalistici" in isolation rather than its meaning in this context of chorea. Mihaela's answer is the best for this context.

: "wandering" refers to "girovagare (afinalistico)"/ Hi, Cristina :-)... the point is "wandering" involves a walking movement and chorea doesn't necessarily refers to it...moreover if you read again the asker's sentence

Mihaela is correct. Though "wandering movements" can be a good translation for the phrase you asked for, I answered the question too quickly without focusing enough on the context. For this particular context, "wandering" is not the most ideal.
