Hi Phil, I've spent ages doing research and even found a few translations - double roofs (same link as Arabella) and even double scaffold. Wikipedia's article on vine training was helpful. As I have no other context (only a small photo which, unfortunately, is of no help at all), I can only imagine it to be a double "tendone" type of vine training. I'm not even sure there is an actual translation. Thanks for your help!

OK, well, I've looked it up, and it seems a shame to waste the link:

Could you tell us what research you've done and what thoughts you've had? Have you looked up impalcare in a dictionary, for example?

double pergola

Tendone a doppio impalco is typical of Puglia
It is "a particular Apulian training system with double horizontal roofs"

I don't know whether your text actually refers to this 'tendone' type of vine training.

If referred to the Apulian type, then doppio impalco refers to two roofs at different levels from the ground (i.e. not double curtain).

double curtain

There are a number of trellising methods that viticulturists employ when planting their vines such as the “double curtain” or the “lyre” that were developed by the Australian guru of the canopy, Dr. Richard Smart (Hugh Johnson’s Wine Companion).
When the winemaker has chosen their method, they must next look into the pruning method.
