by a narrow margin, bythe skin of their teeth
By a narrow margin
Éppenhogy, mint itt:
squeak > Senses > noun (act) > 2
Meaning: Something achieved (or escaped) by a narrow margin
http://www.hyperdic.net/dic/s/squeak.shtml
vagy adott esetben kis különbséggel, mint alább:
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's coalition has won the German general election by a narrow margin polling just over 47 per cent of the vote.
www.channel4.com/news/home/z/stories/ 20020923/story02.html
Idiomatikusabb kifejzés a
by the skin of his teeth,
mint itt:
In the end the Victorians escaped by the skin of their teeth and there will have
been many who would have given them scant hope of retaining their title.

If you pass a test by just a few points or your team barely wins the soccer
game, people might say you did so by the skin of your teeth.
kidshealth.org/kid/talk/come_from/skin_teeth.html

A close shave.
In the past, student barbers learned to shave on customers. If they shaved too close, their clients might be cut or even barely escape serious injury. Today, we use this idiom if a person narrowly escapes disaster.
