thou shalt rule

This crops up on the Internet so often that I am sure you are referring to Grapes of Wrath :-)
Steinbeck got the wrong end of the stick, I fear, in imagining that 'timshel' means 'thou mayest'. It means 'thou shalt rule', which is a phrase in the Old Testament but not the name of anyone.

neutral jennib : This is not from Grapes of Wrath, but from East of Eden. You can find what Steinbeck said about timshel at http://timshel.org/timshel.php. I don't know if it's accurate, but it is a very interesting thought.

disagree Eynati : Whatever the standard English translation of this Biblical phrase may be - and the KJB is full of translation errors - it means 'thou SHALT rule'.
