Odded Leon Feb 17, 2011:
I think you're all missing the point a little... While קרווין may well come from carving, it's similar to סנפלינג coming from snap-link (used in rapelling). It may have a lot of meaning and uses in English but it has a single meaning in Hebrew. So there is no point in talking about all the different forms the word carving can take (i.e. carved, carvings, etc.) because they are all irrelevant. The only meaning for קרווין would be as Sangro's example shows, a type of dish that is carved on the spot and immediately served to your plate...
On the other hand I just found the following in a menu:
קרווין בצק עלים ממולא חזה עוף בשר טחון גרגירי חומוס חציל מטוגן פיקנטי
which obviously has nothing to do with the קרווין I imagined. This leaves 2 options: either this is some food none of us has heard about before (not likely) or the word stems from carving but this was forgotten by ponpous chefs who don't speak English and adapted to whatever they want to cook so it will sound more פלצני (very likely). As to your translating it... Try to understand what the dish actually looks like and what it's made of and give a description.
Natalya Sogolovsky Feb 17, 2011:
מאפה בצק עלים may well be a meat pie and the cuttings may be thin. Then again, I'd rather use "cuttings" than "carvings". But no one says it should be grinded meat.
Natalya Sogolovsky Feb 17, 2011:
To Odded Leon Agree with you concerning the carving. Actually what comes to mind is a picture of shwarma cutting - such "carvings" could be put in a pastry.
JeSsRockiT (asker) Feb 17, 2011:
Even if it is carving - is just doesn't make sens to stuff cigars with carved meat...
Natalya Sogolovsky Feb 17, 2011:
to JeSs Haven't seen it, sorry, but I think my idea was correct. I just don't know why it's "carving" and not "carved". Carving is a process and we have the result here... Unless it should be "carvings" in the meaning of "חתיחות".
Odded Leon Feb 17, 2011:
Accuracy then... One thing though, while I'm pretty sure they meant it to be carving it actually makes no sense, you don't carve meat to put it in a pastry, not in the implied fashion of carving anyway... This kind of carving is when the waiter comes to your table with a slab of meat and carves some onto your plate, isn't it?
JeSsRockiT (asker) Feb 17, 2011:
Nata- pls see above - I wrote מנות שונות בתפריט....:-)
Natalya Sogolovsky Feb 17, 2011:
You see - Sangro has given you the idea - mine!
Odded Leon Feb 17, 2011:
I tend to agree with NataSogo and Sangro but... I think the more important question is in what context is this (and your 2 other questions) written. I think this is one of the cases where context should be one of the crucial factors in your decision.
If it's a recipe, or something that has to do with those specific foods, by all means find th best possible matches. If it's prose, think about the target audience and try to find parallel foods פסטלים וסיגרים might sound like an exotic or strange food to an american where in fact it's a very common dish so you might want to replace it with another dish to maintain adequacy rather than accuracy. etc.
JeSsRockiT (asker) Feb 17, 2011:
I was thinking about that but to tell you the truth - I haven't the slightest idea!
Natalya Sogolovsky Feb 17, 2011:
Can it be "carved", and in Hebrew it's sort of changed transliteration? www.internationalstyles.net/recipes/meat-cutting/
