German term

Artistik

German to English Art/Literary Tourism & Travel Circus
I am translating a flyer for a BE readership, about the 'Cirque Bouffon' and its June 2009 tour of Palma, Mallorca.

I am interested to see how people would translate the term 'Artistik' in the two instances it occurs here.

TIA.

circus acts / circus arts

This is indeed a guess, but I did find this:

The Report to the European Parliament of 2003 gives an account of a few professional schools whose training methods have been accredited. These programmes lead to State-approved diplomas and are funded by the State. The Report mentions the National Centre of Circus Arts in France, Accademia del Circo in Italy, the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin und Schule für Artistik – Fachbereich Artistik in Germany, the Higher Institute of Circus Arts (ESAC) in Belgium, Circus Space, Circomedia, Skylight Circus Arts and Zippo’s Academy in the United Kingdom and lastly the theatre arts programme of the Turu Polytechnic School in Finland. We will add that HorsLesMurs, in collaboration with the European Federation of Professional Circus Schools (FEDEC), has published a recap of professional and preprofessional circus schools around the world.

agree casper (X) : wechselnde Artistik: variety circus acts

Thanks, casper - you have a point.
agree Lancashireman : For the first one, i.e. the first occurrence in the double context. Thus "...a sequence of different circus acts...with elements of circus artistry..."

Do you mean the second one? Arts or acts? You have agreed with Kim's arts.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I chose 'circus acts' for the first occurrence and 'acrobatics' for the second, so thank you also to Regine and I'm sorry I can't split the points. Thanks to all who contributed."

circus artistry

Perhaps.

circus artistry
circus arts
show choreography

This touring festival, called "La Fête Foraine," first took place in July 1982. La Fēte Foraine featured workshops to teach the circus arts to the public, after which those who participated could take part in a performance. Ironically, the festival was barred from its own hosting town after complaints from local citizens.

Whereas in a traditional circus the artist could go past the curtain and drop his role, Dragone had created an environment where the artist had to remain in character for the full length of the production.

In late 2008 Cirque du Soleil collaborated with MGM to create a resident show at the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas, featuring Criss Angel, fusing his signature illusions and artistry with acrobatics, dance, puppetry, music and poetry to attempt to tell a story of the exploration of his mind.

agree Lonnie Legg : Circus artistry, here, is what I would say.

agree Helen Shiner : I think I prefer 'circus arts' which we have both alighted upon.
47 mins
agree Bernhard Sulzer : artistry would be my choice.
2 hrs
agree Trudy Peters : I think artistry by itself would be fine.
4 hrs
agree casper (X) : Works fine for the second sentence, but I'm unable to come up with a rendering for 'wechselnde Artistik' by using 'circus artistry'. Any ideas, Kim ?

agree Lancashireman : For the second one.

displays of artistic prowess

At least in the first instance, it seems like a suggestive expression. Maybe the same word doesn't need to be repeated (?) and simply "artistry" or "circus acts" is good then - or even omit that part.

acrobatic performances / acrobatics

This is what I mostly think of when I conjure up pictures of the circus. Or is this too narrow a term?

This is why I think acrobatics would work. The sentence says, "this is not just an assortment of different types of acrobatics."

It may not work for the second sentence, but I think it's a good fit for the first, don't you think?

Above was my answer to the asker's comment. Doesn't show like I want it to.
Note from asker:
Thank you, Regine. This is what is confusing me, because Artistik can mean 'acrobatics', but this particular circus is not really in the traditional mould, so I'm not sure!
Peer comment(s):

neutral Helen Shiner : Acrobatics/Akrobatik is usually mentioned separately to Artistik, hence my suggestion.

agree Barbara Wiebking : I think this is great - and it's also used by http://www.foolpool.de/english/html/pikoshow.html (Jonglage & Artistik = Juggling & Acrobatics).
