Thank you, Armorel, for pointing this out, and yes, it does work for publishable AE.
The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage:
"alternate, alternative - As an adjective, 'alternate' can mean every second one: Our club meets on alternate Wednesdays (not alternative). As adjectives, both 'alternate' and 'alternative' can refer to a choice between two things or among more than two: We have to choose an alternate (or alternative) route.
