Social housing eligibility certificate
"Part of the housing provided by the BGW is subsidized by the state. The tenants must fulfil certain conditions in order to qualify for such housing. A certificate of eligibility (Wohnberechtigungsschein) is required to confirm that the applicant fulfills these conditions. You can obtain this certificate at the Housing Office (Amt für Wohnungsbauförderung). When you hand in your appliction, you present your identity card, your student identity card, a bank statement showing your income and a valid residence permit (for at least one year).

Housing Benefit
A "Wohnberechtigungsschein" ("WBS") is a certificate needed to live in apartments that have been built using state subsidies so as to reduce rent costs. The "Wohnberechtigungsschein" is only available to people below a certain income level. People who have limited means can also apply for housing benefit from their local town hall. This housing benefit is called "Wohngeld".
