German term

Vollstahltrennmesser

German to English Tech/Engineering Printing & Publishing Die Cutting
"Es gibt Vollstahltrennmesser und Trennmesser mit wechselbaren Einsätzen aus Hartmetall."

This is a section in a printers' handbook describing a cutting die.

Trennmesser=separating knife (client confirmed)

I have found several translations for "Vollstahl"
solid steel (proZ without references), all steel, full steel

Does anyone have an idea which term would be suitable for "vollstahl" here?
Proposed translations (English)
3 one-piece steel separating knife
3 +1 solid tool

Z.E. Ball (asker) Aug 25, 2007:
Just want to make things a little clearer. I have to use "separating knife" for "Trennmesser". What I need help with is the "Vollstahl".

????trennmesser > ???? separating knife

????=Vollstahl

one-piece steel separating knife

That's the solution I think I'd use; just possibly "solid steel separating knife"

solid tool

Technical and Engineering Dict, De Vries

Apparently here, a separating knife without exchangable blades.

Perhaps here: separating knife with non-exchangeable blade
Or: non-exchangeable-blade separating knife

In any case, DeVries says that "Vollstahl" = solid tool, and it appears that the separating knife with exchangeable blades is being distinguished from a separating tool without exchangeable blades.

It may be hard to believe, but my translation is meant to be a specific translation to "Vollstahl" as it is used in this context.
I hope you can find a translation that better suits your concept, but, if not, mine remains available for your use.

First, no problem, amigo. I fully understand your situation; been there, done that.

Second: my suggestions include "solid tool separating knife," "separating knife with non-exchangeable blade" and "non-exchangeable-blade separating knife."
The main point being that your context seems to indicate that this kind of knife is distinguishable from one whose blades can be replaced.
Note from asker:
Thanks for the fast response but I'm specifically looking for a translation for "Vollstahl".
I hope you haven't misunderstood me. I really do appreciate your assistance. I just think that the term needs to somehow involve "steel" However, if I was really sure of what I need I wouldn't have posted. That's why I'm thankful for your input. :-)
Just to make sure that I understood your suggestion correctly: solid tool separating knife?
Thanks so much for the detailed answer. In the end the client told me that the term they use in their sector is solid steel separating knife.
