German term

Lagerung

German to English Medical Medical (general) Radiology
A list of learning examinations procedures that radiology students are expected to be able to carry out independently:

Patientenvorbereitung, positionierung, HF-Spulenwahl, LAGERUNG, Zentrierung

I would normally have presumed lagerung to mean positioning but positionierung is listed beforehand...

Hello Lesley "this turned out to be the information that I required"

It'd be interesting to know what that means. I don't agree with "placed," but this may be because it's phrased differently in the EN articles I've seen.

First, "Lagerung" is now apparently being replaced by "Positionierung":
http://pflegeberatung-aachen.de/positionieren-oder-lagern/

So I don't know why Positionierung, Lagerung and Zentrierung would show up in the same sentence. It may refer to "Fixierung." Please note the use of the term "Lagerung" right before "Zentrierung" at this link:
http://www.praxisteam-aktiv.iww.de/content/patientenlagerung...

Second, Zentrierung from an EN source:
"The part of the body being scanned will be placed in the middle of the magnet."
https://radiology.ucsf.edu/patient-care/prepare/mri

Third:
"You will be positioned on the moveable examination table. Straps and bolsters may be used to help you stay still and maintain the correct position during imaging."
https://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info.cfm?pg=bodymr

Positionierung first, Lagerung second (stay still + maintain), I'd say. But it's a bit confusing.

Not my field, but could you use "placement" or "insertion"?

German term (edited): Positionierung vs. Lagerung
Selected

placement vs positioning

While your text does not specifiy the object of "Positionierung" and "Lagerung", technically both the coil(s) and the patient need to be "positioned" for imaging. However, "Lagerung" most likely refers to the patient as this term is not really used for the positioning of items – see, for example, Wikipedia definitions at https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagerung ).

Positionierung and Lagerung may basically describe any of the aspects of getting the target region into the optimal position relative to the coils – such as placing the patient on the examination table (in prone or supine position, etc.), or placing the coils over the patient – and then positioning the target region for imaging with the aid of cushions, pads and holders. I would suggest the use of "placement" and "positioning" as two different (similarly unspecific) terms.

choosing the correct position

I take it that with "positioning" the position of the Patient is meant. IMO it doesnt matter to use it twice.

coil positioning

Since it follows coil selection, it makes sense that this is the positioning of the coil (followed by centering of the coil) of the machine.

Lagerung does seem to be used for positioning the patient on the bed. It doesn't explain why there are two types of positioning. Positioning the coil on the patient and then centering it relative to the magnet in the machine makes more sense than what I wrote above. To me positioning involves more spatial orientation than placement and neither are suitable as standalone topics. However, it's probably best to get more information/confirmation if you want to be more specific.

A dedicated shoulder coil and careful patient positioning in external rotation with the shoulder as close as reasonably possible to the center of the magnet is necessary for a good image quality.
