Discussion

Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Sep 8, 2007:
Sorry:

The results of the current study demonstrated that the presence of fat in the liver of islet transplant recipients is a common finding on hepatic imaging and can be confirmed histologically. The fat infiltration on imaging, which was not present before transplantation, had either a focal or diffuse, though not homogeneous, pattern of hepatic involvement. Diffuse fatty infiltration of the liver with heterogeneous granular appearance on ultrasound is not a common finding in the general population.
Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Sep 8, 2007:
Then: ** fatty liver with finely-to-coarsely granular appearance **
You may consider the following description (from he web)

Bjørn Anthun Sep 8, 2007:
It's fatty liver disease (which can progress to cirrhosis) but the text doesn't state cirrhosis, so I'd stay with 'fatty liver'. My main problem is the part that says 'klein- bis großtropfige'.
Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Sep 8, 2007:
Renate: Here they use *finely granular* so may be fine-to-coarse granular cirrhosis... is better..

Chronic veno-occlusive disease, a diffuse, finely granular cirrhosis.

micro- and macrovesicular steatosis

Fatty disorders of the liver are defined by 2 major histologic patterns of steatosis within hepatocytes. Microvesicular steatosis is characterized by the presence of numerous small vesicles of fat that do not displace the nucleus (Figures 1, 2). Macrovesicular steatosis is characterized by engorgement of the hepatocyte by a large fat globule that displaces the nucleus.
