German term

Betriebsstoff und Hilfsstoffe

German to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering Conveyor systems - roller (gravity), belt, bucket etc., including their motors, where fitted
These translate as "fuel" and "process materials" respectively in most of the dictionaries at my command. For the first, there is (only) one entry in the glossary, which suggests "consumables or operating supplies" so, how do I translate "Hilfsstoffe"? Is the above answer inaccurate, or does the expression "consumables or operating supplies" cover both aspects? After all, how much "fuel" can a conveyor system use.....
The context is the life-expiry disposal of machinery such as a conveyor system; the sentence: "Für eine sichere und umweltschonende Entsorgung von Betriebs-, Hilfsstoffen und Austauschteilen ist zu sorgen".

Any opinions out there, please?

Discussion

John Jory Nov 14, 2005:
"Betriebsstoff" can be just about anything that is used in a process or by a machine.
IMO "consumables AND operating supplies" is the most suitable translation, as is is just as all-inclusive and vague as the German phrase.
Harry Borsje Nov 14, 2005:
This is a general 'CE'-sentence, not necessarily in its entirety applicable to this machine! The first would (in this case) be remnants of the material conveyed/processed and the second lubricants etc. used in/for the machine itself.

German term (edited): Betriebsstoffe und Hilfsstoffe

operating materials and supplies

Johnson Matthey, the big industrial and pharmaceutical group, reports massive savings from introducing an e-procurement system based on Ariba products to handle its purchasing of non-process materials and supplies (usually known as MRO, or maintenance, repair and operations). At the company's Royston site alone, inventory had been reduced to from £5 million to £40,000. The Ariba system is part of a wider solution supplied by BuckHickman InOne, a member of the Premier Farnell group. (http://www.elogmag.com/magazine/31/johnson-matthey.shtml)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "By a whisker, I think this is the best answer, and it's well backed up, so thanks, Ruth; and thanks to all you other guys who posted - particularly JJ, as I think that his wording was the one I finally chose."

raw materials and ancillary supplies

Having looked carefully at your text and your comments, I am pretty certain that the correct corresponding essence in English would be the raw materials used (goods in) and the ancillary (or auxiliary) materials/products that are added and used in the manufacturing process.

operating supply items, lubricants and additives

Leo provided the former for Betriebsstoff and
additives/auxiliaries is the term I know for Hilfsstoff
These may be of help.

Peer comment(s):

agree Anne H : I think you should definitely include lubricants in the materials to be disposed of safely. My own suggestion would be consumables and operating supplies.

process materials

I found this in Pons in terms of "Verfahrensmittel". Wenn es sich auf Produktionsstoffe bezieht, dann sind es laut Pons operating supplies. In deinem Fall würde ich process materials nehmen.
