German term

Weichensteller-Fall

German to English Law/Patents Law (general)
The context is a report on autonomous vehicles, whereby a machine must solve a dilemma situation. Such as, "does the vehicle drive over the edge of the cliff resulting in the possible death of the vehicle occupants or drive into the children playing on the road resulting in the possible death of the children".

The document I am translating is not a legal document, but "Weichensteller-Fall" does appear to have some kind of legal context, before I translate this with something completely silly does anybody know an acceptable translation, and indicate this with an example.

Here is the direct context from the document:

Dilemma-Situationen
Welzel in ZstW 1951, 47, 51.
Dilemma-Situationen sind dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass ein automatisiertes Fahrzeug vor der Entscheidung steht eines von zwei Übeln notwendigerweise verwirklichen zu müssen.
Diese Fälle sind schon lange im rechtlichen Kontext unter dem „Weichensteller-Fall“ bekannt.

agree Herbmione Granger : I prefer "Trolley Dilemma" http://www.trolleydilemma.com/ "Problem" implies that a solution or repair is possible.

neutral Colin Newberry : I go along with herbalchemist. Because it's a drastic situation and more than just a problem.
