By the way, I know that "JHS" is that abbreviation for "Justizhauptsekretär," because I just called a person with that abbreviation (found on the Net at the Brandenbürgisches Oberlandesgericht) and asked! ;-P

As far as the suggested translation is concerned, well... opinions may vary. ;)

Added after Asker's question: As far as I can tell, the general consesus seems to be to avoid using "secretary," as the "Justizhauptsekretär" does much more than a 'mere' secretary (and most seem to think that what a secretary does would be more along the lines of what a "Justizfachangestellter" must do).

Added after Asker's second question: Dietl/lorenz, 5th ed., p. 744 suggests "registrar," "records clerk," and then "clerk of the court." Perhaps using one of the first two suggested translations would solve that problem.
