German term

Vorhandener Aufenthaltstitel

German to English Social Sciences Government / Politics
Vorhandener Aufenthaltstitel

This is an entry field to be completed on a "Antrag auf Verlängerung einer Aufenthaltserlaubnis" form. Do they mean an "actual document" by "Titel" here or is it being used in the sense of "status" i.e "existing residence permit" or "existing residence status"? Thanks.

existing residence permit

Here's a badly written explanation.
---
There is (sic) a lot of terms in German that can be translated as residence permit, but different terms imply different degree of restrictions for their holders. An Aufenthaltserlaubnis is the best residence status that a new-come non-EU citizen can get. E.g. it is the only permit that allows you to work full-time. So don't mix up the term Aufenthaltserlaubnis with other terms that also begin with Aufenthalt (except for the Aufenthaltstitel and Aufenthaltsgenehmigung which are superterms for all kinds of residence permits).

Peer comment(s):

agree Kieran McCann : the 'Titel' is abstract, not physical: http://www.info4alien.de/titel.htm

agree Tamara Ferencak : (This reference is rather poor....) In Germany, they do no longer distinguish between "Aufenthaltsgenehmigung" and "Aufenthaltsberechtigung". Anything pertaining thereto is simply called "Aufenthaltstitel" :-)
