German term

Klassenprimus

German to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hello all! This is from a text about Africa - I've never come across the word "Klassenprimus" before. I can guess at its meaning, but does anyone have a translation?

"Lesotho - das kleinen Land, das komplett umschlossen ist vom reichen Klassenprimus des ganzen Kontinents – Südafrika."

Many thanks!

"model student"

... in inverted commas might just be a possibility if you want to include the aspect of development that I think Klassenprimus entails?
Klassenprimus IMO can have negative connotations as in "swot" which the student picture might just convey.

agree Johanna Timm, PhD : I was also thinking along the lines of 'teacher's pet'

prime territories

The small land-locked state of Lesotho, completely surrounded by the Republic of South Africa and its most prime territories.

Lesotho is referred to as the "Switzerland of Africa".

The word Klassenprimus is generally used for grade A students in school, however in this context it means that this small African state is completely surrounded by rich class (South Africa) compared to the rest of the continent.
