German term

Messlänge

German to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial Kalottenlager
I'm having problems understanding Messelänge here. I am translating some marketing material about various bearings.

In one section I have
Technische Daten
Kalottenlager
Messlänge 360°

The 360° is really confusing me if it is anything to do with length.

All help gratefully received.

Discussion

Ken Cox Sep 25, 2008:
comment A Kalottenlager is a spherical bearing, and spherical bearings are commonly used as self-aligning shaft bearings or load-supporting bearings formed as mating partial-hemisphere surfaces. 'Messlänge 360°' suggests (IMHO) that the bearing (or more specifically, one of the two mating parts) can be rotated around its full circumference for the purpose of making measurements. In the absence of further context, I would suggest 'measuring range'.
Louise Mawbey (asker) Sep 25, 2008:
Hello Ken, thanks for your help. Messlänge is one of the specifications of Kalottenlager and 360° is the value of Messlänge. Sorry I didn't make it clearer. I don't have any informaiton on the device or equipment, this is the data for the bearing itself.
Ken Cox Sep 25, 2008:
And is 360° the value of Messlänge, or is 'Messlänge 360°' to be understood as a single term (with an associated value)?
Ken Cox Sep 25, 2008:
a) What sort of device or equipment?
b) Are Kalottenlager and Messlänge separate entries under 'Technische Daten', or is Messlänge one of the specifications of Kalottenlager?

agree hazmatgerman (X) : With ga(u)ge length; a complete circle would be 360°, if only 1/2 was checked it would be 180° and so forth.

Magnetic Angle Sensor provides 0-360° measurement.

March 20, 2007 - Measuring ½ in. dia with overall length of less than 2 in., Model PRAS1 uses position magnet to provide contact-free and wear-free angular measurements. Unit has typical resolution of 0.1° and yields analog signal through use of D/A converter. Featuring M12 industrial housing rated up to IP68, sensor produces 4-20 mA, 0.5-4.5 V, and 0.5-10 V analog outputs. It is suited for use in factory automation equipment, variable valve controls, and mobile working machines.;
ASM Sensors, Inc. Introduces Contact-Free 360° Angle Sensor

Elmhurst, IL (March 19, 2007) - ASM Sensors, Inc. sets the new benchmark for angular position sensors with the new development of a magnetic angle sensor in a very compact M12 housing. The PRAS1 sensor provides absolute position measurement over full 360° sensing range and is part of the successful POSIROT® family of magnetic angular sensors. With only a 1/2 inch diameter and overall length of less than 2 inches, this small sensor saves space and can be installed in the tightest locations.

The contact-free and wear-free angular measurement of 0° to 360° is achieved by using a position magnet. PRAS1 has a typical resolution of 0.1° and yields an analog signal through the use of a D/A converter. Three different analog outputs are available: 4-20 mA, 0.5-4.5 V and 0.5-10V. The industrial housing is rated up to IP68.

With its dependable and rugged design, the PRAS1 angle sensor is well suited for angle monitoring in a wide variety of heavy duty applications such as factory automation equipment, variable valve controls, mobile working machines, etc.

Thanks for the information Ingrid. To Ken - no, the 'Moosinninger' have nothing to do with my text! Thanks for your help too.
