bar AND barÜ Are you sure that bar and barÜ is the same? Could Ü stand for Überdruck?

bar (guage)

This apparently means 'bar Überdruck', which corresponds to the older unit 'atÜ' (or 'atü'). In this context, Überdruck means 'positive pressure' relative to normal atmospheric pressure, which is commonly called 'guage pressure' in English. That's because a pressure guage normally indidates the difference between the measured pressure and atmospheric pressure.

This is sometimes written as 'barg' in English, but that practice is strongly discourged by standardisation organisations because 'barg' (and the corresponding 'bara' = 'bar (absolute)' are formally undefined terms and potentially misleading).

agree Michele Johnson : But isn't it gAUge not gUAge? I just realized the connection between ü and Überdruck. Good explanation of gauge vs. absolute pressure here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_(unit)

Thanks. Spelling isn't my best feature...

agree Andrew D : barü is the pressure above the atmospherical presssure of 1 bar " 7 barü = 8 bar abs." see =>chapter 1, page 9 http://www.drucklufttechnik.de/www\temp\Dlrepos.nsf/LookupHT...

The u with umlaut must be a typo.

disagree LegalTrans D : Sorry - not a typo, Terence; it's a measuring unit

It looks to me as if the writer has got confused with the old method of expressing pressures, i.e. "Atü" or "Atue"; AFAIK, this should just be "bar", and the English expression is the same as a result of standardisation. The old English term was "psi", os "pounds per square inch". I seem to recall 1 bar = approximately 14.6 psi.
Peer comment(s):

agree kk ll (X) : wird auch barÜ geschrieben. Siehe http://www.dampferzeuger.de/anfragen/index.php

agree Michele Johnson : My engineering books give the conversion as 1 bar = 14.5 psi. Side note: I don't really think this is an "old" English expression - in the US at least, many pressures are specified in psi (tires, propane tanks, etc)
