German term

Haubenküche/Haubenrestaurant

German to English Marketing Cooking / Culinary Gastronomy, restaurants, hotels, kitchens
Some sort of a special feature because it comes up time and again among the list of amenities in a hotel guide I'm translating. There's even talk of a "Doppelhaube".

But what the devil are they? Surely they're not just cookers with a hood, are they? If so, what's so special about them that they deserve a mention for prospective visitors?

accredited / award winning

I asked a similar question a while back, although I had haubenmenü, see the glossary entry in the link below.

These 'Hauben' are chef's hats. And restaurants are awarded one or two (maybe even three, I don't know). Sort of like Michelin stars, but you can't call them that!

award-winning worked in my context, don't know whether it would in yours ...

HTH anyway

agree Kay Fisher (X) : Yup! the world's only four-hat (can you call them that?!) restaurant is in Austria, and there's a woman in the kitchen...

agree gangels (X) : The French 'tocque' is used, like 4-star cuisine, it would be 4-tocque though I have never seen it that way

agree Nancy Arrowsmith : the 4 Haubenkueche was not far from where I lived...

agree AngieD : The Hauben are awarded by Gaultmillau in Austria (am slowly eating my way round their recommendations! It's a hard life :-))

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks, though I'll probably go for "Gault Millau-graded chef/restaurant". And there I was thinking it was something special about the cooker hood (Abzugs-HAUBE)!!"

Hauben kitchen / Hauben restaurant

Better retain the Hauben and translate for kitchen / restaurant. From the Google strikes I see that Hauben is better off untranslated.
Peer comment(s):

agree Kay Fisher (X) : certainly an option, especially if the guide explains somewhere what this is...

Thanks Kay. Of course. It is always the best policy to explain for once somewhere in the beginning of the text and getting along with the translation of the rest.
