German term

unter Schnitt begutachten

German to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
just can't figure out what they mean here:

...und möchten bei dieser Gelegenheit:
- Ihre Firma besichtigen und Ihre Produkte evtl. Unter Schnitt begutachten

we would like to take this opportunity to: view your company and your products and perhaps...?

Discussion

davidgreen (asker) May 14, 2009:
Well, maybe not so hush-hush. The products are lathes and tools and machines to manufacture aluminum mouldings, milling and drilling machines, grinding machines... any suggestions now based on the info?
davidgreen (asker) May 13, 2009:
thanks guys, will see if it's possible to discuss with the client or find out what the products are and get back to you. sorry for the vagueness!
Peter Downes May 13, 2009:
@ David As Steffen pointed out, "Unter Schnitt" could mean almost anything without context, looking at them first hand to watching them doing the cutting are two possibilities, both rather different !!!
Steffen Walter May 13, 2009:
No "Unter Schnitt" is certainly something much more specific than just "closely".
davidgreen (asker) May 13, 2009:
again, couldn't it be:
we would like to take this opportunity to: view your company and perhaps closely examine your products
??
Steffen Walter May 13, 2009:
@ David That's too bad - you should have asked for this information when taking on the job. As Spud rightly points out, the correct translation depends on further context.
Peter Downes May 13, 2009:
Products The type of product could alter the whole context here. As Bernd mentioned, harvesters cut crops.
davidgreen (asker) May 13, 2009:
oh, sorry, I don't have any idea of the type of products, it's all very vague and hush-hush
davidgreen (asker) May 13, 2009:
actually, I made a mistake on the grammar here. Isn't it simply

we would like to take this opportunity to: view your company and perhaps closely examine your products

Bernd Runge May 13, 2009:
What kind of products are we talking about?
Steffen Walter May 13, 2009:
Products What kind of product(s) is this about? They might refer to a technical/manufacturing process specific to these products.

observe (them) while they are being cut

Looks likely, but more context would help....

Might also be "while they are being blended", if it refers to drinks, perfumes etc...

How about:
"...while they are cutting/working/in operation etc."...?

Context is so important, innit...
Peer comment(s):

agree Steffen Walter : Blending would be VERschnitt, though.

neutral Bernd Runge : What would you say if these were harvesting machines??

YOU asked the important question; I don't think the use of a harvester is all that common on "products", as suggested by THIS context...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "thanks all for your help, I went with my original idea (with a note to the client) as it was very general and the idea of the visit was indeed to view the products (albeit while they're cutting or at work etc.). "
20 hrs

have a look at your products in/during cutting operations

... as a choice.
Begutachten in this context imho is not an assessment, etc.

1 day 4 hrs

Inspect ( your products ) in a working environment.

If I was thinking about placing an order or doing business with the company I would like to visit their premises and see the product / equipment "live" before I proceeded to the order stage.
