Mittelständler
German to English
Bus/Financial

German term (edited):
Mittelstndler
member of the middle classes
I imagine this refers to his origins, so I would say "member of the middle classes" - "This 59-year-old member of the middle classes".

: "Small trader" is pretty good because it avoids the manager/owner problem

I think you're gonna have to change the word order a bit ...
You can't say "The 59 year-old owner of a medium-sized company ... " - it sounds terrible.
You can't call him an SME-owner either, because "SME" is always either or ("small" or "medium-sized" - the company can't be both).
If you say "the 59 year-old medium-sized company owner", it might be seen as an indication that his legs are rather short.
How about starting the paragraph with:
"On the face of it, medium-sized company owner XXX has every reason to be [pissed off]. His [main] customer group, the ... is [up shit creek without a paddle]. Yet the 59 year-old is full of optimism ..."
