German term

Sparkasse

Non-PRO German to English Bus/Financial
I am batteling with whether to translate Sparkasse as 'saving bank' or to leave is as 'Sparkasse' since there is a bank by the name of 'Sparkasse' in Germany.

Any suggestions?

Sample sentence:
Seit Jahren sind the Sparkassen fuehrend auf dem Sektor der Berufsausbildung.

Thanks in advance.

German savings bank

I would use German savings bank in this context. Sparkasse in Germany is not really the name but rather the type of bank. There are lots of different Sparkassen in Germany that are working more or less independent (Sparkasse Hamburg, Sparkasse Dresden...)

Sparkasse

trustee savings bank - die Sparkasse
savings bank - die Sparkasse
providend bank - die Sparkasse
penny bank - die Sparkasse

I, personally, would leave it in German and maybe give an explanation in English.

hope it helps :o)

savings bank

For years, savings banks have had the lead in the education sector.

I would translate it, because it is a certain kind of bank - although "Sparkasse" is a name like Dresdner, Deutsche, etc., it is usually either a "Stadt", "Kreis" or whatever -sparkasse. If you had the term "Bausparkasse", you would use building societies, wouldn't you?

Hope you can follow my logic...

Birgit
