German term

spröde

German to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Vienna art exhibition appeal
"Selbst bei spröder Gegenwartskunst zeigt sich das Publikum mitunter schwer begeistert." (Context: the current popularity of Viennese museums.)
??? Am considering "unaccommodating": "Even with unaccommodating contemporary art, the public sometimes raves." ???

NOTE: Word should be along the lines of "nicht gefällig", "schwer zugänglich" (event. "widerspenstig")...
Art that is "spröde" is sometimes--but not necessarily: cerebral, high-brow or dry--so those adjectives are too specific; but "difficult" is too general & "inaccessible" doesn't quite fit. "Difficult-to-digest" sort of fits, EXCEPT that digestion is 'post-ingestion', whereas "spröd" has to do with it being hard to access in the first place...

standoffish @Enkay: Laut "Oxford American": "standoffish".
Nadine Kahn Jul 4, 2007:
heißt es dann nicht: stand-offish?
Lonnie Legg (asker) Jul 4, 2007:
@Stephen: It sounds like you make art--art which some people consider "spröde"...
Lonnie Legg (asker) Jul 2, 2007:
Just one example, you'll find plenty others on the Net (and just think about Beuys, you'll realize a sculpture can be very "schwer zugänglich"...):
"mit unerhörter Sprengkraft und Sanglichkeit wurden widerspenstige Notenmassen..."

Nadine Kahn Jul 2, 2007:
Well, can a sculpture be "schwer zugänglich"? It's fine for literature. A musical composition cannot be considered as "widerspenstig" in my point of view.
Lonnie Legg (asker) Jul 2, 2007:
These attributes can be applied to film, sculpture, literature, a musical composition--any form of art...(you might try googling any of the combinations...)
Nadine Kahn Jul 2, 2007:
I don't know if "nicht gefällig", "schwer zugänglich" (event. "widerspenstig" is appropriate for arts. Seems you are referring to a person who is "spröde".
Lonnie Legg (asker) Jul 2, 2007:
@Millay: "inaccessible" is more like "cryptic/hermetic". "Spröde" can be quite "accessible" With the right approach--and patience.
mill2 Jul 2, 2007:
What's wrong with inaccessible? You could modify it if it seems too strong, like "apparantly inaccessible" or some such. Otherwiese unaccomadating is okay.
Stephen Reader Jul 2, 2007:
... then there's the whole field around 'laconic' 'taciturn' (thesaurus?) but they're both verbal rather than visual. A day on, your own soln still cklicks. Even personally - a friend urging me to 'offer the viewer more', i.e. art 'to appeal'.
Stephen Reader Jul 2, 2007:
Your own 'unaccom.' reads fine to me. If not, then 'sober', which'd extend to the 'dry' & 'nicht gefällig' shades of meaning? (Then there's 'uncompromising', but it doesn't do anything that 'unaccomod. doesn't)

slightly standoffish

"standoffish" - what a great word! But it goes too far. So I'd tone it down with "slightly."

Otherwise, I like your suggestion: "unaccommodating"

Other possibilities that come to mind:
unobliging?
unapproachable?
aloof?

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I still like my accommodating best, but "standoffish" is an interesting attempt. "Austere" would in many cases fit "spröde" Kunst, but is too specific for (my) general usage."

"Austere art" googles well

The ***austere modern art*** and high ceilings may not be to everyone's taste...

The artist literally roars into the rather ***austere modern art*** scene in Johannesbrug, with colour eruptions that can be likened to volcanic upheavals.

I wonder if it's "spröde" though. More text would help!
