waning moon

vieille lune is the opposite of nouvelle lune (which means that the moon reappears). Also "les vieilles lunes"="the good old days", "une vieille lune"="an old fogey", "ce sont des vieilles lunes"="that is old hat", "rejoindre les vieilles lunes"="to disappear"
