Without more context it's hard to say but I get the impression that the trio/group usually do whatever they do indoors and for this special event they will be 'in the neighbourhood', 'out on the streets'. Personally I don't think 'aimlessly' comes into it - they have planned an 'unplanned' session and will just 'be in the neighborhood' - around, without knowing where they'll turn up. The 'au hasard' in the Fr just emphasises how the event is 'unplanned' to a certain extent.
It would help to know what kind of group we're talking about.
