Really get the impression the French is lacking.
And if we're not talking about the Evinrude "Club" outboard motor then "tenir une réunion" YES = to hold a meeting, but "tenir un club" = to run a club ????
I hesitate to vote for my colleagues as "a club for life" sounds a touch sectish & born again, and "a life-long club" does sound peculiar. I've heard of life-long membership!
To make sense of this I would opt for something like:
"... held its very first club event for life members."

: good suggestions, and the context is definitely not enough to go further. As a french person, I can't understand the given sentence... but it doesn't sound as a "pun" as vaughn suggested.
