French term

adjudant-major

Non-PRO French to English Other Military / Defense Rank
US English
Position held in US army (in translation of short story, Arlington, by James Salter, not yet published in the States but translated into French!!)
From what I can gather, it doesn't appear to be too high a rank but this is really not my field...

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Mar 17, 2005:
Something I should have specified... This is in a court martial so I presume the formal title would be used:
"La cour appelle la barre, ladjudant-major Timothy Westerveldt"

Master (First) Sergeant (US Army)

It is not a rank, but an occupation. That's why I should suggest the top rank of NCOs
I really think that "Master Sergeant" would do.

The rank of \"Major\" is used in the French Army for a Senior NCO, and would be translated by \"Staff Sergeant Major (E9)\" to be very very precise.

After reading your note, I should think \"Staff Sergeant Major XXX\" would be the best choice.

adjudant major

Sounds like it's already in French. I've always heard Sergeant major in the US.

I meant to put Sergeant major as my answer, because your question was indeed French to English. Sorry.
