It is not a rank, but an occupation. That's why I should suggest the top rank of NCOs
I really think that "Master Sergeant" would do.

The rank of \"Major\" is used in the French Army for a Senior NCO, and would be translated by \"Staff Sergeant Major (E9)\" to be very very precise.

Sounds like it's already in French. I've always heard Sergeant major in the US.
