French term

constatation

French to English Law/Patents Law (general) Criminal law, Belgium
This term is employed through-out a series of interviews with an investigator who is speaking of a major criminal case he worked on in Belgium. Here is one context:

Lorsque vous avez un fait qui est commis, et bien, vous avez des constatations de procès, donc des constatations. Des constatations techniques et scientifiques.... Lorsqu’ensuite, lorsqu’on a effectué toutes nos constations locales, on a en nombre cueilli les éléments nous permettant d’orienter vers un suspect.

I've looked in law dictionaries and fo undthat this can be finding or reports, among other things. Here, because of the second sentence (the two sentences are close to eachother) I think report works best.
Thanks for any help.

Discussion

Carmen Schultz Oct 11, 2005:
It seems the term is used in a slightly different way in different passages of the text.E.g.,sometimes it means confirmation and at others it seems more the report of the confirmation, and yet other times it means conclusions/ observations/findings.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I think you are right in suggesting that the term is being employed to mean different things. I will have to go back to the document for more context before making a final decision, but thank you for the all the possible translations."
