Discussion

Joshua Wolfe (asker) Oct 17, 2010:
It seems to me, too, that a round of meetings or conferences implies one step in the creation of something, e.g., a treaty. Whereas this cycle de rencontre is not quite that.
Marion Feildel (X) Oct 17, 2010:
Series of talks? IMO a round of meetings/talks has some political aim. A 'cycle de rencontres' can be a series of talks about any subject.

Maybe I'm missing something... ... but I don't see what the problem is. Your rendition looks and sounds perfectly sensible to me. In fact, that's exactly the sort of sentence I had in mind suggesting "round of talks" etc. Looks perfectly fine to me.
Maia Tabet Oct 17, 2010:
Have to agree with Marion F. that "cycle de rencontres" is not a round of talks or meetings. In any case, the original French sentence is pretty ambiguous, and once you insert round of talks in there, it doesn't really work at all. I would suggest going back to the broader document and seeing what can be inferred about this "cycle de rencontres." A quick English rendition would read: "He also presented his project on xxx [date], when the xxxx Foundation inaugurated its round of talks/meetings on the knowledge economy within/at the European Parliament in Brussels." I'm not getting a picture here.

series of conferences/seminars

Judging by the relevant website, it sounds like "rencontre" is used in French here to mean what we would call a conference. However, this webpage also announces the "Programme du séminaire". So "series of seminars" may also be appropriate.
(btw, "series of seminars" = 4,400,000 google hits
"series of conferences" = 2,620,000 google hits)

Or you could use "consultations", "talks" whatever suits your text.

Thank you, but I think it's "round" in this sense.
agree Karen Vincent-Jones (X) : NB 'has started' - 'la fondation' is singular!

Thank you// I was thinking in terms of "they" have started. Same as we say "police HAVE". But yes, of course you will need to adjust the verb to the sentence you use.
neutral Marion Feildel (X) : 'un cycle de rencontres' est le plus souvent une série de conférences-débats. Not meetings, talks nor consultations.

Sorry, what's the difference? Aren't all those just somewhat different forms of essentially the same activities?
